Chinese fans caught stealing social security numbers to vote for idol groups online

It has come to the attention of Korean netizens that some Chinese fans may be stealing the social security numbers of ordinary Korean citizens in order to vote online for their favorite idol groups in this year’s ‘Melon Music Awards.

These netizens recently took screencaps of posts on the Chinese music community site ‘Baidu‘, which contained information and tutorials on how to vote for singers for the ‘Melon Music Awards’, as well as for Korean music programs like ‘Inkigayo.‘ Shockingly, the methods they provided involved illegally using Social Security Numbers of Korean citizens. On top of that, overseas fans have also been using the social security numbers to download music on Korean music sites and buy mobile phone ringtones.

Netizens also noticed that from Super Junior’s voting statistics for the ‘Melon Music Awards’, 57% of the 28,720 votes for the group were from citizens over 40 years of age, which is an extremely unusual occurence, considering how group is mostly popular amongst fans in their teens and 20’s. Voting statistics for the remaining three groups in the top 4 for the ‘online voting’ category - SNSD, SHINeeand Jo Kwon & Ga-In - also have 16-19% of the voters being over 40 years of age.

Posts on the Baidu community site also exhibit users posting screencaps of pop-up windows that appear when they tried to use the stolen social security numbers, asking other users what it meant. The pop-up box was in fact a message from the Identity Theft Prevention Service stating that the social security has been blocked due to suspicions of identity theft.

According to the Population Registration Act Article 37, illegally stealing a social security number is a criminal act that carries a penalty of 3 years of imprisonment and a $8,700 USD fine.

Super Junior-M to come back soon?

Super Junior-M, the sub unit of Super Junior aimed at the Chinese music industry halted all their activities when Hangeng filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment. Despite this, they may make a comeback in the near future according to one of the members.

Member Henry Lau recently tweeted: “Hey its been a while! How have u all been? Hope u haven’t’ forgotten me!!! Sjm comin soon! Love!”

I’m sure no one has forgotten about Henry and fans should be very excited about the comeback. If any more information about their comeback pops up, we’ll be sure to keep you informed.

SM Entertainment is Still Willing to Take Hangeng Back.

SM Still Wants Hangeng.

Amidst controversies surrounding Hangeng’s Chinese CF, his agency, SM Entertainment, has revealed that they would still take back Hankyung, if he should decide to return to Korea.

A representative of the agency spoke with New Daily on November 19th and stated, “Hangeng filed an injunction against SM Entertainment on December 21st, 2009. All of the investigations have been completed and we’re waiting on is the final judgment. We’re curious on the reason as to why the court has yet to pass a judgment. The relationship between Hangeng and SM Entertainment is only becoming uncomfortable because of such delays.”

Regarding their feelings on Hangeng’s actual contract, the representative went on to state:

“At the time of the contract signing, Hangeng was present with his mother and clearly heard the explanation that the contract would be for 13 years. He is the one that signed it. For him to come out now and claim that he received unjust treatment from Korea and that the entire contract is invalid is ridiculous.

China has advanced a lot recently, but at the time, how could he have earned the skills in China in order to become an international star? Hangeng himself knew that SME’s star system was superior, which is why he came to Korea.

There were a few months in the beginning of Super Junior’s career where he was met with uncomfortable situations due to his visa problems, but the fact that he is claiming the contract as invalid is just an excuse.

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding ’slave contracts’ in the entertainment industry lately, and the way we see it, Hangeng just wanted to join the bandwagon and is now being used by associates around him. If he knows that he did not become a top star in China on his own with absolutely no background, I hope that he will think once more on whether it is right for him to go against the company that has raised him thus far.

At the time of his lawsuit, the Super Junior members and company employees found out about it through the newspaper. We are also praying that his recent CF controversy isn’t true as well.

Despite all of this, SM Entertainment believes that it is better for both Hangeng and the company to come back together as opposed to terminating the contract. Whenever Hangeng wants to return, we will take him back.”

After long trainings and the hard work he put in, he finally got the chance to perform in front of everyone. 21 September 2007, Henry was featured in Super Junior’s 2nd album, playing the violin for the title song “Don’t Don”. Later,in 8 April 2008, he debuted as a member of Super Junior M,the 3rd sub unit of Super Junior, together with Hangeng,Siwon,Donghae,Ryeowook,Kyuhyun and Zhou Mi.

Only13 Controversy
The infamous issue started when rumours of Henry as the 14th SJ member surfaced after being featured in Super Junior’s 2nd Album titled Don’t Don. Things got worse when Henry kept appearing in most of Super Junior’s live performances. The Only13 campaign was started by Super Junior’s fanclub called ELF. ELF began buying SM stocks, giving Henry the silent treatment during Super Junior Concerts and as far as sending cyber attacks directed to Henry on SM’s official website and Super Junior’s official website. The attacks became out of hand when news of Super Junior’s subgroup “Super Junior China” surfaced. Even after Henry’s debut, ELF continuously protest by attacking Super Junior M’s official website that was established by Sohu.com.
But soon, the campaign slowly fades in other countries, slowly expressing their acceptance of Henry into Super Junior M. However, in some countries, ELF still display their protest by chanting “Protect Only13” during Henry’s violin part in Don’t Don.
